Legendary coach Tony Dungy speaks about leadership on the campus of WFU
On March 26, The Leadership Project of Wake Forest University welcomed its inaugural speaker, legendary football coach and bestselling author Tony Dungy, to speak on campus at Wait Chapel. In his talk, Tony shared thoughts about leadership and the importance of both individual and team leadership.
In his comments, Dungy provided valuable insights regarding the importance of putting others and organizations of which we are a part, first. Additionally, he stressed that a leader’s job is to help people and organizations realize potential. In discussing teams, Dungy indicated the teams who are most successful, are ones whose leaders shared leadership, empowering and enabling all members to exercise leadership.
Another trait deemed important by Dungy is authenticity. Coach Dungy’s leadership style based on respect, care, and building good relationships wasn’t always embraced. Tony shared that several football team owners refused to hire him as head coach, as they felt his leadership style could not be successful in the NFL. Winning the Super Bowl, as the Indianapolis Colts Head Coach, proved them wrong and reinforced the importance of being authentic.
Dungy encouraged all listeners to follow their dreams, even if they are different from others.
