Our Ongoing Commitment To Sustainability

As part of a university taking meaningful steps toward carbon reduction, resource efficiency, and climate action, we see sustainability as a powerful engine for innovation and long-term value creation. From the energy that powers our campus to the food systems that sustain it, sustainability at Wake Forest is practiced, tested, and continually evolving.

Here in the School of Business, our students, faculty, and alumni turn those commitments into capabilityโ€”advancing renewable energy, rethinking waste, designing resilient supply chains, and integrating sustainability into strategy across industries and sectors.

Choosing Wake Forest means joining a university thatโ€™s learning, adapting, and leading by exampleโ€”and a business school that equips you to do the same. Together, we act as a catalyst for good through decisions that shape organizations and the world they serve. Because at Wake Forest, sustainability sits At the Heart of Businessโ€”helping businesses and organizations create a better world.

People, Practice, and Impact

Sustainability at Wake Forest isnโ€™t confined to a classroom or a building โ€” itโ€™s lived through our people. Our community of students, faculty, alumni, and partners brings the universityโ€™s mission of Pro Humanitate, “For Humanity,” to life in every corner of campus and beyond.

  • Faculty and students collaborate on real-world projects โ€” from advancing renewable energy research to tackling food equity through partnerships with organizations like Second Harvest Food Bank.
  • Alumni lead sustainability, ESG, and impact initiatives at companies like Meta, PwC, Hershey, Ally Financial, Watershed, and KPMG.
  • Community partnerships keep our commitments grounded in place, strengthening connections across Winston-Salem and shaping a more resilient future for the region we call home.

Together, we demonstrate that sustainability is a framework for resilient, future-focused business leadership.

SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION

From the energy powering our buildings to campus dining, here’s how Wake Forest – and our students – are actively shaping a more sustainable future.

  • Wake Forest is committed to 100% renewable energy, aligning climate goals with operational performance.
  • MSBA students partnered with the City of Winston-Salem to model solar adoption, translating data into insight and action.
  • Alumni Spotlight: Owen Smith (MBA), Energy Manager at Meta, applies those same principles on a global scale.

  • More than 30% of campus food spend is sustainably sourced, supported by vendor partnerships focused on regenerative agriculture.
  • Faculty such as Dr. Pelin Pekgun apply operations research to strengthen food equity through the Second Harvest Food Bank.
  • Alumni Spotlight: Maddy Eldredge (BEM) leads sustainability and human rights efforts at The Hershey Company

  • Farrell Hall’s LEED Gold certification and biophilic design show how spaces can optimize both well-being and performance through healthy design principles.
  • Natural light, clean air, and locally sourced materials create an environment that inspires connection and focus.
  • Since 2007, all new Wake Forest construction has met at least LEED Silver standards, embedding sustainability into the universityโ€™s physical foundation.

Meet our Director of Sustainability Initiatives

Ashley Wilcox joined the School of Business in October 2024 to lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of sustainability, including curriculum integration and expanding experiential learning opportunities.

โ€œSustainability and Pro Humanitate are our inseparable allies,โ€ she says. โ€œSustainability practices, with their focus on environmental responsibility and social equity, embody the core principles of Pro Humanitate. Together, they provide a holistic framework for building a better future.โ€

With experience across diverse sectors and industries, Wilcox has a broad range of knowledge spanning academic program development, curriculum innovation, sustainability and strategy. She has played pivotal roles in creating inclusive classroom environments for children with special needs, designing software platforms for streamlined legislative bill-tracking, and developing sustainability courses that empower students through design thinking to tackle complex issues.

As Director of Sustainability Initiatives, Wilcox collaborates with the Universityโ€™s Office of Sustainability and related academic centers and institutes to integrate sustainability into key areas of focus within the School of Business. This includes working closely with faculty to incorporate sustainability principles into courses and developing new experiential learning opportunities for students.
