Babcock School names new director of Career Management Center

Guy R. Groff has been named director of the Career Management Center at Wake Forest University’s Babcock Graduate School of Management.

Groff was most recently the director of the Graduate Career Management Center at the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University.

With more than 20 years leadership experience, Groff has spent the past decade in MBA education career management. Groff established and continuously enhanced a comprehensive career development program for full-time and working professional students at ASU that is considered one of the world’s best.

“Guy will be an invaluable resource to our students as we put successful placement at the top of our priority list, and I am pleased that he shares my interest in helping students to find the ways they can be successful in service to industry and humanity,” said Wake Forest Dean of Business Steve Reinemund.

Under Groff’s guidance, full-time MBA students at ASU achieved 100 percent internship placement, and since 2003 have consistently maintained job placement above 90 percent within three months of graduation. In 2007, students achieved 87.9 percent at graduation with 97.3 percent within three months from graduation, tying with the No.1 school in the U.S. News and World Report annual ranking.

“I am extremely passionate about creating successful career development programs and I love individual counseling and teaching,” Groff said.

“Most of all I love developing a staff that is not only skilled, but devoted to helping students and alumni succeed. I truly enjoy the success of others. I believe teaching a person how to manage their own career and job search will help them throughout their life, especially in today’s volatile employment market.”

A former Marine and director of worldwide career counseling services for the U.S. Marine Corps, Groff was placement director and a faculty member at Lamson College in Tempe, Ariz., and career program manager for the Department of Defense in Iwakuni, Japan. Groff has a master’s degree of education in counseling and personnel services and a bachelor’s degree in business and management, both from the University of Maryland.

“Groff’s experience and success with both the corporate development and student counseling sides of the career management function made him the ideal person for this position,” said Sherry Moss, interim full-time MBA program director. “We’re excited that he’s here and look forward to his contributions to the Babcock School.”
