GREENSBORO — In order to mark the 25th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, the Volunteer Center of Greensboro joined other cities nationwide by taking part in the Corporation for National and Community Service’s Day of giving back.
On Monday, non-profits, businesses, school systems and families all joined at Four Seasons Town Center for a day of volunteering. The organizations participated in activities that ranged from helping send special notes to those in nursing homes, making scarves and blankets for the homeless, and they even created care packages and letters for those serving overseas in the military.
“I wanted to make it a day on instead of a day off for Martin Luther King Day,” said volunteer Jackie Greenlee.
More than 40 years after his death, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s life still continues to inspire.
“What he stood for was to bring unity so that we can all come together, we can all serve one another, we can take a look at what the needs are in the community,” said Hollie Rose-Galli, with the Volunteer Center of Greensboro.
But the volunteering doesn’t stop here. Many of these people say it’s been a day of inspiration, one that’s pushing them to serve throughout the year. Greensboro is one of just a few cities in the country to be designated as an expansion sight for the “United We Serve” national day of service, receiving grant money to help the program grow.
