Wake Forest Cited in National Article about CEOs as Business School Deans
New job profile for deans: more CEO than academic

Business school deans that have more characteristics of a CEO than an academic are currently winning many of the sought after dean positions at business schools, according to new research from The Korn/Ferry Institute, a talent management think tank.
The development comes with increased pressure of falling application numbers, making it more essential for deans to “lead the business”. Examples for deans with a corporate background include Sally Blount from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management who worked at the Boston Consulting Group, former Viacom Entertainment CEO Neil Braun from Pace University, former Quest Diagnostics CEO Kenneth Freeman from Boston University and former PepsiCo CEO Steven Reinemund from Wake Forest University’s Schools of Business for example.
The Korn/Ferry Institute’s report “The Business School Dean Redefined,” says that competition demands a new kind of dean with a leadership profile that emphasizes strategic skills, enterprise management, innovation, and people and relationship effectiveness.
Managing different sets of relationships is crucial to the skill set of today’s deans, claim the researchers, who note that deans need to gain buy-in from faculty, donors, alumni, administrators, prospective students, and corporate recruiters alike.
