School's Business Students of Color group discusses networking and navigating the corporate world
The School’s Business Students of Color (BSOC) organization held a panel discussion about networking and navigating the corporate world on December 1.
“We asked the panelists to share their experiences, challenges, and words of wisdom about the workplace,” said Lawrence Watkins (MSA ’17), who helped organize the event. “We hope the students learn how to make an impact in their industry and help other young professionals entering the workplace.”
Panelists included:
- Derrick Boone, Senior Associate Professor of Marketing at the School
- Latesha Byrd, CPA Campus Recruiter at Dixon Hughes Goodman, LLP
- Crystal Martin, Corporate Trainer at Lincoln Financial
- Kenny Herbst, Sisel Faculty Fellow, Associate Professor of Marketing at the School
- Cache’ Heidel (MSA ‘12), CPA Senior Tax Accounting EY
- Eyden Thomas, HR Administrative Coordinator at Reynolds American, Inc.
The students heard suggestions about using their soft skills, such as patience, getting to know their colleagues, and actively seeking feedback during the discussion. “Coach those who are below you,” Heidel advised the students. “Be diplomatic how you respond to people.”
The panelists offered advice about inclusion, maintaining a strong work ethic, and professional behavior to the students assembled in the Bern Beatty Colloquium. “At some point as the leader, you must make the tough call,” said Herbst. “Not everyone will be happy, but you have to be comfortable making the difficult decisions.”
The BSOC serves as a source of community for graduate students of color in the School of Business, promoting leadership opportunities, fostering relationships, and equipping students to successfully navigate in the global marketplace.
