Get your employees to make better suggestions

Exxon-Calloway Fellow and Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior John Sumanth says as the world becomes ever more complex and dynamic, organizations’ need for high quality ideas and suggestions from their employees has seemingly never been greater. He says leaders have an important role to encourage more “voice” in the workplace. He and colleague David Hofmann wrote a piece published in Harvard Business Review on how leaders can get their employees to make better suggestions, not just more of them.

The first step to getting helpful, constructive feedback is to admit that you as a leader don’t always have the answers. Your focus should be on accomplishing the goal, not advocating for your particular idea about how best to achieve it.
