Building and Leading Effective Teams
Effective teams spur innovation, facilitate adaptation, and ensure efficient functioning in almost all organizations. Teams that are led effectively have greater cohesion, employee engagement, and creativity which result in superior performance and satisfaction. Learning how to build, lead, and sustain effective teams provides leaders and organizations with a competitive advantage.
This 1-day program will provide the participant with the knowledge and tools to build and lead effective teams (standing, temporary, and/or virtual), manage conflict, build trust with others, and shape a culture of empowerment and shared leadership.
Building and Leading Effective Teams is the second of four open enrollment leadership programs. New programs will be introduced quarterly with completion of all four programs resulting in a Certificate in Leadership from the Center for Leadership and Character. Interested participants are able and encouraged to participate in this individual program or begin the series at any point to earn the certificate.
Current and emerging leaders will receive practical, insightful guidance and actionable tools on how to:
- Build a cohesive and aligned team
- Manage conflict in a constructive manner
- Engage in challenging conversations
- Accelerate the development of trust within your organization
- Shape a culture of empowerment within the team to encourage innovation
- Foster continuous learning to enhance performance
- Lead standing, temporary, and virtual teams
Who Should Attend?
This program is designed for both new and experienced leaders wishing to enhance their ability to build and lead effective teams. Interested participants are encouraged to attend individually or in teams from their organizations.
Certificate in Leadership
Authentic and Effective Leadership is part one of a series of four open enrollment leadership programs. By completing all four, participants will earn a Certificate in Leadership from the School of Business’ Allegacy Center for Leadership and Character and Wake Forest Executive Education. An executive education certificate from the Wake Forest School of Business is an opportunity to immerse yourself in topics of key personal interest and professional development. It’s recognition for the commitment to advancing your career. Refine fundamental skills, explore new topics of interest, or address challenges being faced in your organization. Certificates are earned by completing each course listed in the track. You’ll have up to two years to earn your certificate, so you can join a track at any point. This is an open enrollment program. Application is not required. Course registration is complete when payment is processed. Upon registration, a representative of Wake Forest will contact you to validate the registration information and to assist in fee payment.

Patrick Sweeney is a Professor of the Practice of Management and the Executive Director of Wake Forest School of Business’ Allegacy Center for Leadership and Character. He is an experienced senior leader-practitioner with over 39 years of experience leading high performing organizations and scholar whose research focuses on leader, leadership, and organizational development. Pat has published across an array of academic and military professional publications. Pat served over 29 years in the United States Army and retired as a Colonel and a combat veteran. His leadership assignments in the United States and abroad included: Deputy and Acting Head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership, the United States Military Academy at West Point, for five years; Director, Eisenhower Leader Development Graduate Education Program , a joint venture with Columbia University, for five years at West Point; Liaison Officer for the Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division, Operation Iraqi Freedom I; Commander of a 450-person artillery unit and Chief of Staff of a 1600-person organization in the 101st Airborne Division. Pat has experience creating and implementing programs at the institution level and is the primary architect of the Domain of the Human Spirit, the main character dimension for West Point’s Leader Development System; a foundational dimension in the U.S. Army’s Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Program; and a main pillar in the Department of Defense’s Total Force Fitness Program. He has extensive consulting experience in the areas of leader, leadership, and organizational development for Fortune 500 companies to include: Deloitte, EMCOR, GE, HP, Kellogg’s, JP Morgan Chase, Mercedes Benz, P&G, Pratt and Whitney, Prudential, State Farm, Synchrony Financial, USAA, YPO, and 7-Eleven and the Departments of Defense and Energy.

The cost of the program is $675 and includes materials, continental breakfast and lunch, and is due in full at time of registration. Wake Forest University alumni, faculty, and staff receive a 25% tuition discount. Course materials are included in the cost of tuition. Course materials will be distributed electronically in advance of the program start date. Participants must have a laptop or tablet computer to access course materials.
This course is offered contingent upon sufficient enrollment. If a course must be cancelled, all registered participants will be notified at least five (5) calendar days before the course’s start date. All registered participants will receive a 100% tuition refund. No fees will be charged for cancelled courses.
Individual Cancellation – Refund Policy
Prospective participants who withdraw at least 10 days prior to the start of a course will receive a full refund of tuition paid.
