Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates of the 2010 Summer Management Program (SMP)?
The 2010 program will be held May 25, 2010 - June 30, 2010.

Who is eligible to take the Summer Management Program (SMP)?
Any student in good standing with his/her respective college or university is eligible to apply to the program. Students should be pursuing a non-business degree and have completed two years of coursework by summer 2010.

What types of students attend SMP?
Students who are pursuing degrees in liberal arts or in the sciences are ideal for this program. We believe the SMP, coupled with the above degrees, offers students a compelling story as they seek employment or admission to professional or graduate schools.

What is the academic year of the participants?
Students participate in the program after their sophomore year or junior year of college. However, recent college graduates may also participate in the program.

How are applications evaluated?
A faculty admissions committee evaluates the applications based on the student’s motivation and interest, his/her demonstrated achievement and scholarship, and his/her potential contribution to the learning environment. There is no minimum required GPA; however, scholastic achievement will be considered. The short essays also provide insights into the student’s critical thinking ability, perspective and motivation, and communication skills.

What is the deadline and when will I be notified about my status?
The application deadline is March 24, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. All applicants will be notified of their status within two weeks of the deadline. Students who are accepted will be required to submit a $300 deposit and complete and return an enrollment form by April 24, 2010. Waitlisted students will be considered should accepted students fail to respond by the April 24, 2010 deadline. Students whose applications are received after the deadline will be considered after those applications that arrived on time.

How much does the program cost?
The 2010 SMP tuition will be determined in the next couple of months. Housing can be arranged through WFU’s Resident Life and Housing Department. Summer housing is $TBD for a single, $TBD for a double, and $TBD for a triple.

Is there scholarship money available for participants?
Yes. The SMP offers scholarships for students based on need and merit. Once admitted to the program, a student may apply to for this assistance.

Students might also be eligible for financial aid through their respective college/university’s financial aid office. Students should inquire directly with their financial aid office for guidance.

Can I work a part-time job and participate in the program?
There are no restrictions regarding working outside this program. Each participant and his/her family must make this determination. In the past, some students were able to maintain a part-time job while others felt the program’s rigor required their full-time attention.

What are the hours of the program?
Classes meet Monday through Friday (there are no Saturday classes for the Summer Management Program). There are three classes per day with each class lasting 90 minutes. The class schedule is:

Class 1 9:25 a.m. to 10:40 a.m.
Class 2 10:50 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.
<Lunch Break>
Class 3 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

In the past, we have deviated a little from the normal schedule for career day, field trips, presentations, and the addition of special topics.

For me, the best part of the SMP was the caliber of the faculty. It was refreshing to learn from professors who not only had the requisite knowledge, but real world experiences they could draw from as well. Their success outside the classroom made me extremely confident in their ability to teach the skills and information I need to successfully pursue a career in Finance
