[stacy.poindexter]
Good morning! Thank you for joining us for our February chat session. We will
answer as many questions as we can in the next hour.
sunil: i have submitted my application
on the 10th...when can i expect a decision
stacy.poindexter> It usually takes
about four weeks for the Admissions Committee to review an application once we
receive all materials.
qingwu: I want to know if the decision of first roll
has been made and send to the applicants.
stacy.poindexter> We
have been reviewing applications weekly (and making decisions) since December
1.
sunil: i have a 600 on the GMAT and a
3.5 GPA...can you comment on the same
stacy.poindexter> Our
average GMAT is 639, and our average GPA is 3.2.

morning! I am taking part in this chat

stacy.poindexter> Good morning! Thanks
for joining us. We do not have a "set" number of candidates on the waitlist,

constantly reviewing waitlist candidates so that we can give them a decision as
soon as possible!
jaeky: sorry late, good mornign
stacy.poindexter> Good morning!
sunil: i have not received a

accept for the fall semester,2003.

mimi.musumeci@mba.wfu.edu - she can tell you when your file will be reviewed.
sunil: how important is it to have an interview
stacy.poindexter> The
interview is definitely helpful, but we understand that international
applicants will have difficulty travelling to the
DHirte: What are three items
you feel put Babcock ahead of your peers?
stacy.poindexter> Definitely
the small size and personal attention that they receive.
mattjazz82: I'm in undergrade currently. I understand that you say that wk
experience isn't not recommended, but do you strongly believe that we wk first
before coming to grad school, since the average age is 27. Would we feel allienated
during classes?
stacy.poindexter> Work experience is
very helpful - not only in the classroom, but also as students pursue
employment after graduation.

Krishna K. I hope there will not be any problem in tracking my score because of
this error committed by ETS. On this regard I have already enclosed a Notarised Affidavit for Ratification in my package that I
had sent you.
stacy.poindexter> I would recommend
contacting mimi.musumeci@mba.wfu.edu to make sure she has this information.

stacy.poindexter> I am an Associate
Director in the Admissions office.
Ted: Are you allowed to
tell us how many students you expect to enroll in the class of 2005 and/or how
many students have sent in a deposit to date?
stacy.poindexter> Hi Ted. Our goal is 114 students
in the Fall 03 entering class (Class of 2005). I know we have already started
receiving deposits, but I'm not sure how many.
vshah23: Who do we need
to contact to setup an interview?
stacy.poindexter> Domestic applicants

Interviews for international applicants abroad are invitation only.
jaeky: I am an international student in
stacy.poindexter> We
will evaluate your work experience prior to coming to the
Ryan: Can you give us an
idea of how many seats are still open for admission?
stacy.poindexter> Right now there are
still plenty of seats open. Deposits are not due until April 1, so we really
don't know how many of those to whom we have extended offers will accept until
that time.
Tomato: How many people
applying round 1 did get acceptance?
stacy.poindexter> We
do not track this - we wait until the end of the admissions cycle and just an
overall number.

have about 15 students from
Tomato: Thank you very
much, Stacy!
stacy.poindexter> Sure!
sunil: will not having an interview impact adversely in the final
decision
stacy.poindexter> Ultimately,
all international candidates who are admitted will either interview with an
alum in their home city or have a phone interview with the Admissions office.
But these interviews are invitation only.
Jinzi: hello, everybody.I want to ask how many applicants Babcock
has admitted till now and how many Babcock expect to admit in the end?
stacy.poindexter> Our
goal is to have 114 students here in August! I don't know how many we have
already admitted - it is still early in the admissions process.
vshah23: What is the most
popular concentration?
stacy.poindexter> The
most popular concentration is finance, followed by marketing.
basak: In case I cannot make the deadline, will my application be
considered for the next year?

speaking with our Admissions Director regarding this. Her contact information
is Mary.Goss@mba.wfu.edu.

viewed the same as campus interviews?
stacy.poindexter> No - alumni
interviews take place at different locations throughout the

mattjazz82: I'll be
receiving my BS in business Administration, but not exactly sure what area of
business I want to pursue. who is there to help us
figure out this problem
stacy.poindexter> Yes and no. Usually our students
have an idea of what they're interested in before coming back to B-school.
Those who aren't sure often develop an interest by one of the classes that they
are taking. Members of the
Jinzi: I have retake Tofel test. this score is higher
than last time. If I should resent to score to Babcock.Because
last time my TOfel only 593.
stacy.poindexter> Please have your lastes score sent to us ! That's
great that you improved your score.
Tomato: Around when can

decision.

Upon receiving my MBA, would you all offer such services, or are we
required to pursue firms on our own?

(including Consortiums in
basak: Howmany essays are we supposed
to write, two or four. In the admissions

how many Chiness is apply Babcock now?
stacy.poindexter> We
have between 8 and 10 Chinese students at Babcock.
Ryan: When interviewing,
will the admissions officer have a copy of our application in front of
her? What information will the
interviewer have, what information is important to impart?
stacy.poindexter> Your
application must be on file with the Admissions office before you come in for

resume.

approximately 40% of our class selected the finance concentration.

must apply online (www.princetonreview.com) in order to pay with a credit card.
basak: Is only one copy of transcripts from both the high school
and the universities attended required?
stacy.poindexter> Just universities.
hk: I have not recd an invite for an interview and am an
international applicant? My decision is due so I guess this means a non-admit?
Thank you.
stacy.poindexter> Not necessarily...I
would recommend contacting mimi.musumeci@mba.wfu.edu to see if indeed your file
has been reviewed. We are running a little bit behind!

kanakgupta: What are the major criteria for admissions? As
in, what is the best combination of GMAT,TOEFL, essay,
and under graduate studies?
stacy.poindexter> The
closer (or above) you are to our averages, the stronger your application. The
minimum requirement for the TOEFL is 250. We do not have a preference on
undergraduate degree.
sunil: Stacy....the application has 3 compulsory essays and one
optional...is this correct
stacy.poindexter> Two essays are
required, the third is optional.
kanakgupta: How much importance is given to work experience?
And, how important are the essays?
stacy.poindexter> While a few of our
students do not have full-time, post-graduate work experience, it is important
- not just in the admissions process, but in the classroom and when pursuing
employment after graduation. The essays give the Admissions Committee an idea
of writing strengths.
arjun: How fast will mimi.musumeci@mba.wfu.edu respond to my
queries ?
stacy.poindexter> Pretty quickly. She is out of the office
today, but should be back tomorrow.

kanakgupta: What is the average age of people studying at Babock? also, what is the student
background breakup? Also, what specialisations can be

stacy.poindexter> The
average age is 27, and has been for years. If you visit www.mba.wfu.edu and go
to Full-Time Program, then the admissions section, all of this information is
posted.
sunil: stacy...the application that was
sent in the CD has 3 compulsory essays and one optional
stacy.poindexter> Two are required, the third is optional.
basak: Do international students have any opportunity to work
during the first year on or off campus?
stacy.poindexter> No - no first-year
student (domestic or international) is permitted to work.
kanakgupta: What is the next application deadline?
stacy.poindexter> The
final deadline for international applicants is April 1 (extended from March 1).
qianning: how many student did select marketing
concentration last year?
stacy.poindexter> Approximately
20% of last year's graduating class selected marketing.
DHirte: Do you see Fall 2003 applications as being as competitive, or more
competitive, than previous years due to the struggling economy?
stacy.poindexter> The thing that I
have noticed more than anything when reviewing applications is the quality - I
think the quality is better than it's ever been, which ultimately makes it more
competitive.
arjun: Are all international applicants automatically eligible
for Financial Aid ?
stacy.poindexter> As long as you
indicate on the application that you wish to be considered for merit-based
scholarships, you will be considered!
kanakgupta: Pardon myignorance,
but is there a dual degree offered?
stacy.poindexter> Yes - we offer a
joint
ccruthis: For the MBA/PhD program, are there
scholarships and grants available?
stacy.poindexter> If you are
interested in this program, you will have to contact
Carolyn.Campbell@mba.wfu.edu - the MBA is through the
Gladys: I am planning to
apply for full time MBA in fall 2004. can I use those
forms I downloaded from your website recently?
stacy.poindexter> No - we update our
application every year. I would wait until this fall to download next year's
forms!
Ted: I was looking on the
web site for information on the Wachovia Securities Applied Security Analysis
& Asset Management but struck out...is this a student-run portfolio
project?
stacy.poindexter> Ahhh,
a question that has stumped me. I am going to have to refer you to
Eddie.ONeal@mba.wfu.edu - he is the instructor for this class and can tell you
anything you want to know about it. Eddie will be more than happy to answer
this question!

are last year's questions. Please download a new application from our web site

compared to last year? Thank you.
stacy.poindexter> They
are about the same as last year.
arjun: How much has recession hit the placement oppurtunities in your B-school?
stacy.poindexter> We
have actually done really well considering the economy in the
Lawandria: What is the cost per
year?
stacy.poindexter> Tuition is $25,000
per year.
kanakgupta: What are the LSAT requirements for the
stacy.poindexter> I do not know. You
would have to contact the law school for that information.
ccruthis: Can an MBA evening student be considered
full-time depending on number of hours taken?
stacy.poindexter> No - they are
structured completely differently.
qianning: I notice from the Businessweek
that you only interview 36% applicant. How do you select applicants who need to
be interviewed. Whether it means that they are perferred?
stacy.poindexter> Interviews are
optional for domestic candidates who have more than one year of work
experience. Interviews for international candidates are by invitation only.
Gladys: Do you offer
concentration "General Management'?
stacy.poindexter> Yes we do!
hk: thanks very much for your time Stacy!
stacy.poindexter> Thanks for joining
us.
sunil: stacy....looks like i have used the last years form for the submission....how
do i go about rectifying this
stacy.poindexter> Email me directly at
stacy.poindexter@mba.wfu.edu after the chat is over.
basak: Will the admissions committee take self-reported GMAT
scores into consideration or will they wait for the official score to arrive
before the deadline?
stacy.poindexter> We
will not make a final decision on an applicant until we have received official

| stacy.poindexter | Good afternoon and thank you for joining our February chat. I am here with Mary Goss, our Director of Admissions, and we will answer as many questions as possible over the next hour. |
| ............................ MKeenen joined............. | |
| ............................ birgir joined............. | |
| Amit | <Q>How important is GMAT score for admissions. Does babcock admit students with less than 600 score but otherwise excellent work experience and under grad score |
| mary.goss | <A>GMAT scores are one part of the application. Our 80% range is 570 - 720. We look closely at work experience, GPA and recommendations. |
| Brian | <Q>Are there any plans to increase the class size, currently ~125 students? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>Hi Brian - we have no plans to change our 3/38 Plan (three sections of 38 students). Our small size is what sets us apart! |
| govindraj | <Q>How long does the admission office take to process an application and inform the candidates of the result? |
| mary.goss | <A>Once an application is complete, it usually takes about 4-5 weeks to process an application. International students applications will be reviewed next week. |
| mayurg | <Q>I have scored 600 in my GMAT and 253 in my TOEFL, I have 2 yrs of working experience in my banking industry, what are my chances of geing admitted and 2. what are my chances of getting a scholarship. |
| mary.goss | <A>Your chances of being admitted will depend on the quality of the applicant pool. I would encourage you to apply. |
| phil | <Q>Greatings, I just finished my online application and will send other documents tomorrow. As a Chinese, when will my application be reviewed? |
| mary.goss | <A>your application will be reviewed four weeks after it is completed. |
| Brian | <Q>Each team consists of assigned members, will my team members be from the same section, or a combination of all sections. |
| mary.goss | <A>You will be assigned to a team and your team will be in the same section for the year. |
| mayurg | <Q>hi this is mAyur here from India, I wanted to know whether International students are eligible for merit based scholarship. what is the last day for applying to merit based scholarship, what are the prerequisites for merit based scholarshIP??? |
| mary.goss | <A>International students are eligible for merit based scholarships. I would get your application in before March 1st. We base scholarships on work experience, GMAT's, GPA's, interview and recommendations. |
| abarron | <Q>What would you say are the strengths of the marketing concentrations at Babcock? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>We have exceptional faculty members who teach marketing courses, as well as strong corporate relationships in the marketing area. |
| Brian | <Q>I have a 710 GMAT and a 3.23 GPA(chemical engineering). Will my relatively strong GMAT score offset my GPA when you consider my academic potential? |
| mary.goss | <A>Brian, congrats on your GMAT. Your GPA will be looked at along with your engineering degree. IF you have work experience, you may qualify for our Dean's scholars program. The deadline for application for that program is February 15th. |
| birgir | <Q>Hi, I was wondering, you say you will review Intl applications next week, but the final deadline for Intl applications is still March 1st, right? |
| mary.goss | <A>That is correct. But we will start to review the applications that we have on file. |
| ............................ abarron left............. | |
| ............................ abarron joined............. | |
| Brian | <Q>How does the job market look for 2003 Babcock graduates? Are students receiving a good amount of interest from recruiters? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>In all honesty, the job market will be tough for graduates again this year. Students are going to have to really work closely with our Career Management Staff and utilize their networking skills and contacts. It is worth mentioning that despite the economy, we had a 94% placement rate for the Class of 2002... |
| birgir | <Q>Is an interview a requirement to be considered for merit-based scholarships? |
| mary.goss | <A>An interview will definitely help in the scholarship decision. We do have an alumni interviewing program in place to help with this. |
| phil | <Q>My backgroud is China-based manufacturer, home owned, international business, my position is sales manager with 2.5 years working experience. Will this backgroud make my application different compared with Bankers and Consultants? |
| mary.goss | <A>Your background sounds very interesting. I would need to read your entire file to determine how truly differant you are. |
| DamonWeigel | <Q>Since you seek to enroll approximately 125 students, and you have limited knowledge of what the numerical qualifications of the "average" applicant will be, would applying by the 15th of February be really beneficial to being admitted? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>Yes, especially if you are interested in being considered for a scholarship. Years of experience have given us a good feel of the trends, and scholarship funds tend to be depleted pretty early. |
| Subbu | <Q>Hi Stacy, I have just completed my Master's (GPA - 3.3) and a GMAT score of 600. During the course of my Master's I was an RA and have been working at IBM as an RA for the last 2 years (of which, I have worked full-time for the past year). The question that I have is in regards to the application. The application asks for details on the salary earned. But as for me I have earned a fixed income over the 2-year period in addition to the tuition waver that I was given. So how exactl |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>I would recommend listing just the income that you earned as an RA. Under the Special Recognitions/Awards section, you can indicate that you received virtually a full scholarship to graduate school (tuition waiver). |
| Subbu | <Q>Stacy, What is the acceptance rate? |
| mary.goss | <A>The acceptance rate last year was 47%. we expect it to be closer to 40% this year. |
| ............................ mglick joined............. | |
| ............................ Subbu left............. | |
| MKeenen | <Q>Do many of the students take the opportunity to study abroad for a semester? |
| mary.goss | <A>We have several students from other countries come to Wake MBA for a semester, but we don't have anyone going abroad from our program. The reason being, that the semester when an individual goes abroad is first semester second year. This is the optimal time for company interviews and job opportunities for the second year students. |
| ............................ Subbu joined............. | |
| birgir | <Q>Do you ever call applicants in for an interview to help you evaluate their application, given that they haven't already been interviewed, or are admission decisions based on the material you have at hand when the application is reviewed? |
| mary.goss | <A>We do ask some individuals to come in for an interview, but it is in your best interest to initiate that process and schedule the interview before your file is reviewed. |
| DamonWeigel | <Q>In reference to my previous question about applying early, what is the 50th percentile for scholarships and monetary awards? Do you have any special scholarships for prospective MBAs from undergraduate schools from the midwest? What makes an application especially competitive for scholarship awards? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>Unfortunately, I cannot provide information about the 50th percentile of scholarships. We do not have funds set aside for schools from the midwest. Strong GMAT, GPA and work experience can make an application more competitive. |
| mglick | <Q>Hi, this is Mike Glick and I'm interested in the Supply Chain Management concentration. Could you tell me how many students take this route at Babcock? Also, what kind of Supply Chain experience do the instructors have? |
| mary.goss | <A>I would contact Tim Smunt, Professor of Management to discuss your interests. His email is tim.smunt@mba.wfu.edu |
| Brian | <Q>What is your targeted percentages of international, minority and female applicants? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>Targeted percentages are as follows: international - 25%, minority - 15%, females - 30%. |
| MKeenen | <Q>And are there plans to add any schools in Asia to the program? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>For studying abroad purposes? |
| phil | <Q>If my application is found missing some documents, can admission committee advice me by email which will be faster than by mail? |
| mary.goss | <A>The fastest way to find out what is missing is to contact Mimi at mimi.musumeci@mba.wfu.edu She will be very helpful. Also, if you haven't submitted your application yet, put a note in there and asked to be notified by email. |
| Subbu | <Q>Would you have information on the actual number / percentage of students who have less than the average experience? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>About 10% of our class has less than one year of full-time work experience - the majority of these students are joint degree applicants (MD/MBA or JD/MBA). The remainder are applicants who had exceptional files (and interviews). |
| mglick | <Q>If you've received a complete application and the interview is still weeks away, do you start to process the application or do you wait until after the interview? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>If we are aware that you are planning to interview with us, we will hold your application until after the interview before making a decision. |
| MKeenen | <Q>yes |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>While I do not have specific information about Asia, I do know that we are always trying to develop relationships with schools worldwide. |
| DamonWeigel | <Q>I interviewed in December and will be submitting my application this week. When can I expect to receive an admissions decision? |
| mary.goss | <A>You can expect an admissions decision 4 weeks after we receive a completed application. |

| mglick | <Q>Are there any Teaching Assistant positions that a student could apply for in this program? What about with Wake Forest University? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>Yes - graduate assistantships are available to second-year students only. They are responsible for contacting faculty members to set them up. There are also opportunities on campus - for example at the library - but first-year students are not permitted to work. |

| Nikolaos | <Q>Is the MBA program more on the theoretic side or more on the professional practice side? |
| mary.goss | <A>The forst year of the program ids focused more on theory, but the second year is more focused on practical application. |
| Mani | <Q>If an applicant had attended more than one school for the undergrad degree, does WFU average the two GPA's? My transfered GPA went to zero when I transfered to the new school where I eventually graduated from. |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>No. We will look at your final GPA (from your alma mater). |
| Nikolaos | <Q>Do you have any statistics regarding the average placement of the graduating class during the first six months after graduation? |
| mary.goss | <A>94% of our class was placed 3 months after graduation. We are very pleased with this number! |
| Mani | <Q>Do you offer phone interviews for those who cannot schedule an on-campus or alumnus interview? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>Phone interviews are by invitation only. |
| Subbu | <Q>Adding on Nikolaos' question, what percentage of the teaching hinges on case studies, discussions and classes? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>This number can change from year to year, depending on the professor and who is teaching the core classes. I would estimate it at 60% teaching/discussion and 40% case right now. |
| Nikolaos | <Q>Are there any real professional experiences and opportunities to work with distinguished professionals during the course, except the internship period? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>Yes. Many of our faculty members fall into this category, too! We have numerous guest speakers on campus throughout the year, and students have ample opportunity to meet and speak with them. |
| Mani | <Q>Do you require transcripts from all schools attended? Even though all transfered courses appear on the final transcript and you don't consider the transfered GPA as a determining factor? |
| mary.goss | <A>For accredidation reasons, we require transcripts from every college or university you attended. |
| DamonWeigel | <Q>You mentioned the acceptance rate declining to perhaps 40%. Is this more of a function of the quantity or quality of applicants? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>Both! |
| stacy.poindexter | We only have time for a few more questions this afternoon. |
| mglick | <Q>Social Question...Are there any intramural sports that we can join, for instance softball or football? |
| mary.goss | <A>There are lots of intermural sports available. A large % of our students participate in them. It is a great stress reliever! |
| Mani | <Q>Do you have ample on-campus housing on grad students? |
| stacy.poindexter | <A>There is no on-campus housing for graduate students. The University does own several houses and rents rooms to international students. These houses are directly across the street from the Babcock School and are assigned on a space-available basis. |
